The Act of Leadership
Leading in a modern world
by Glen Hamilton
3 min read
Twenty-five years of training people from all walks of life has seen a myriad of transformations. The process of acknowledging our innate sense of play, embracing nerves and building community within a group has created an environment of personal change.

The focus was never to make an actor, but the catalyst and mechanism was acting.

Great leadership and personal character travel parallel paths. A sense of self, confidence and personal truth build character. The sharing of this within the community of a classroom, builds connection with others.  In an acting class every good teacher develops leadership in their students. The most powerful transformations of one student will lift the class to new heights far beyond what a teacher can do single handedly. In this sense, through the development of the individual comes the development of the group. The best classroom is when the teacher can hand the figurative baton to the student and watch the real learning take place.

Acting classes are not ABOUT leadership, but they are about character – and by character I mean personal character. The building of self. The leader has embraced risk, connected to others, shared stories and faced fear. They have enjoyed failure and success and embraced both with equal acceptance. The leader knows more about themselves and stands more honestly in front of those around them.

The beginning of leadership has an indelible place in the acting classroom.
Darlo Drama has been running their signature acting courses in Sydney for 25 years.
